Ladies are known to not build the same pipes as men do, and may struggle to find some privacy when nature calls for outdoor adventures. The purpose of a female urination device is to relieve the problem of your own eyes and to get the woman to stand up without taking off any clothes. However, not all urinary funnels targeting women are equal. There are a few things you should know before bringing a test.

Common problems with urination devices in women and how to solve them

As with any new gear, you need to learn how to use a female urination device. Most women agree that it is best to try it out before a rafting trip or other wilderness adventure in their own home (we recommend showering). Keep some of these FAQs and solutions in mind when practicing goals:

1) Overflow, overflow and splash.

Solution: If overflow is a consistent issue when using a turf urination funnel, it may be wise to upgrade to a wider funnel-like model. If you continue to have problems, the restriction process may also help resolve the issue.

As far as splashing is concerned, try to bring the device closer to the body or control the speed of urine. Make sure to keep a wide stance so you don’t wear it on your shoes and keep you back to the wind.

2) My body will not relax.

Solution: You’ve been squatting or sitting down to the bathroom all your life, so it only takes your body to believe that there’s nothing wrong with it. Give yourself some time to re-study your brain to understand this new way of life.

3) I still feel like I have to pull down my pants.

Solution: It might be that you can’t find a way to make the device suction, or because it feels more natural. Even so, if you lose balance, you can still get additional rewards that you don’t have to squat and potentially land in your own puddle (who doesn’t want to avoid this?). You may be more comfortable over time, just unzip and move your underwear aside. Don’t rush.

If you are a woman who loves the outdoors, invest a few dollars to see if you like using a female urination device, which is definitely worth considering. This can be a game-changer for your next outdoor trip.

Carrie Aronson, former private and charter travel manager at OARS, has been using it for over 20 years. “It’s not only suitable for adventure and remote areas, but also during the trip when it comes to some less pleasant toilets at campgrounds and gas stations,” she said. “I also use it extensively in Greece, India and Nepal, and they tend to be in the ‘start’ style toilets you have to squat.”

She added that the female urination device is also great for women who have knee problems and find it difficult to squat down regardless of position.
