HX announces extensive expansion of camping and kayaking in Antarctica

This Antarctic season, HX (Hurtigruten Expedition), The world’s oldest expedition cruise line is expanding extensively on camping and kayaking activities in Antarctica, greatly increasing the capacity of the entire fleet. Starting in October 2025, HX will provide you with more guests’ kayaking and camping opportunities in Antarctica, adding 188% more kayaks than ever before, and adding campsites. All of this is maintained and fully operated in the IAATO Guidelines where HX is a founding member.

HX’s enhanced product involves more than quantity – it involves smarter, more inclusive and more diverse adventures. From calm solo paddles to deeper dive guided tours, HX now offers seven different activities in its fleet, including two kayaking styles, two camping styles, polar dives, extended hikes and snowmen.

Two ways to camp in Antarctica:
- Bivvy Bag Camping (New!): Sleeping in new lightweight, weather-ready bags under the Antarctic sky is the closest experience to a true polar adventure camping experience. With custom gear suitable for polar conditions (the harshest conditions for HX testing in Scandinavia), this original and sturdy adventure allows guests to connect directly with ice, silence and stars. capacity: Up to 60 guests. price: Euro 350 pp
- Tent camping for 2 people: Traditional low impact polar camping in high performance adventure tents. This is a great option for those who want to share their experiences with their peers while avoiding avoiding elements.capacity: 30 guests (2 tents per tent). price: Euro 429 pp
All necessary gears are available, including camping options, including pairing bags or tent kits, insulated sleeping pads, lined sleeping bags and head torch. Guests are advised to bring their own warm, layered clothes, hot socks (plus spare parts), gloves, hats, neck covers, water bottles and cameras to capture the experience. Usually camping is once every five days. On longer trips, it may take a second night on ice in weather and conditions.

Two ways to kayaking in Antarctica:
- Discover Kayak (Inflatable – New!): The inflatable, self-guided kayak is lightweight, durable and modern design to provide a close-to-water experience. They are ideal for calm conditions and intimate exploration. Guests row independently at their own pace in a dedicated area, and the safety boats are always monitoring. - Sea Explorer Kayaking (hard shell – expanded capacity): Under the guidance of two adventure experts, the hard shell sea kayaking is designed for long-term paddling and enhanced control in dynamic Antarctic conditions. Designed for range, stability and ability to cut into Antarctic silence, these sleek adventure-class kayaks are perfect for more technical outings. During the Antarctic season of 2025/2026, all kayak and camping bookings will be managed on board by the expedition team, allowing for real-time flexibility based on weather, itinerary and guest preferences. The previous lottery system will be removed and a first come first served service system will be used on most voyages. Booking systems are being developed in the coming seasons. All activities are weather and itinerary dependent. If cancelled, HX will do everything possible to reschedule. If rescheduled cannot be rescheduled, a full refund will be provided.
