Discover Chokladbollar through Swedish Fika
Fika is not only a coffee break, but a Swedish institution that celebrates the art of slowing down. This precious tradition involves gathering with others on coffee and pastries to create moments of connection in our busy lives. Almost every afternoon, during our Swedish adventures, we find ourselves embracing this beautiful custom, and during this ritual, Chokladbollar quickly becomes our favorite treat. (That and cinnamon bread, but still dealing with the recipe!)
These unbaked chocolate oat balls are everywhere: in charming cafes, restaurants and even grocery stores. Each bite makes a nice balance of rich cocoa, coffee, hearty oats and sweet coconut. (Good people also have butter!) It’s a combination that captures the essence of Scandinavian comfort foods…a little coffee and the sweetness to share with friends.
Favorite Brands of Snowmobile Guides
Our snowmobile guide is particularly passionate about the specific Chokladbollar brands. During the tour we stopped on a frozen lake where he gave us each with pre-packaged chokladbollar and a paper cup of hot leaf juice. Between our snow landscapes and sharing stories of the Swedish wilderness, he couldn’t stop buying brands for his favorite stores. His enthusiasm was infectious, so I took a photo and we found ourselves tasked with tracking these legendary chocolate balls in every grocery store we visited.

We finally discovered his beloved brand is located in a supermarket in Stockholm. So of course, we purchased a package to take home, hoping to expand our Swedish Fika experience and share it with friends.
Challenge of finding chokladbollar at home
When I got home, reality began soon. In most of our grocery stores, Swedish Fika Treats is not very rich. Our precious Chokladbollar hiding disappears faster than we expected, which makes us feel so eager and there is no easy way to satisfy it. At that time, we decided to take things into our own kitchen and recreate these beloved snacks in our own kitchen.
Making homemade chokladbollar
After studying traditional recipes and trying the ingredients, we perfected our own version of Chokladbollar. The beauty of these snacks lies in their simplicity. No baking is required, just mix, roll and refrigerate. Here is our tried and tested chokladbollar recipe:

- 100 g (1/2 cup) butter, room temperature
- 3/4 DL (1/3 cup) sugar
- 3 DL (1 1/5 cups) oatmeal (flake oats)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla powder
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2-3 tablespoons espresso
- 1 dl (2/5 cup) dried chopped coconut (unsweetened)

In a bowl, stir together the butter and sugar until they are evenly combined.

Add oatmeal, vanilla powder, cocoa powder and coffee. Mix until the batter is smooth.

Roll the batter into small balls. They are usually a little smaller than golf. Then pour the coconut on a plate and roll the balls until covered with coconut.

Store chocolate balls in the refrigerator. When you are ready to eat them, serve coffee as an afternoon fika.

Perfect chokladbollar
The key to the real chokladbollar is the details. Easy to mix with room temperature butter. And don’t skip coffee as it will add depth and enhance the chocolate flavor without making the balls taste like coffee. The mixture should stay well when rolling, but if it is too sticky, let it cool for 30 minutes before shaping again.
Traditional chokladbollar rolls in coconut, but some Swedish variants use pearl sugar or chopped nuts. We prefer the classic coconut coating, which adds subtle sweetness and pleasant texture contrast.

Take Swedish Fika home
Let Chokladbollar at home be our way to keep the Swedish Fika spirit alive. We’ve found that these simple snacks have the ability to turn any ordinary afternoon into something special. Whether we are off work or entertaining friends, serving homemade Chokladbollar with freshly brewed coffee instantly creates a comfortable, carefree atmosphere that makes Fika so great.
The best part? Unlike many traditional Swedish snacks, Chokladbollar does not require special equipment or hard-to-find ingredients. Everything you need may already be in your pantry, making it easy for people to satisfy the sudden desire for Swedish comfort food.

Storage and fresh tips
Proper storage is essential to maintain the ideal texture of the chokladbollar. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator where they will stay fresh for up to a week. Cold temperature helps them maintain shape and prevents the butter from becoming too soft.
For longer storage space, Chokladbollar freezes for up to three months. Place them in a refrigerator safe container and use parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. When you are ready to enjoy them, just melt in the refrigerator for a few hours.
We found that Chokladbollar actually improved after refrigeration overnight, as the flavors blended together and the texture became completely firm but still tender.
